week 11-19 may

During the last week, I further developed the program, following the last tutorial suggestions. On this first experiment, the program allows the user to play with different styles of typefaces on top of any uploaded images. The idea is to understand at what extent the context and the shape of the typefaces change the meaning of what is written. Or even, if the image and the typeface by themselves can add understanding when there is no meaning to the words.

At the same time, I created another version that uses typefaces that are easily recognized. Following my investigation of the past weeks, I used Gotham (Obama’s Hope poster by Shepard Fairey and Leave Means Leave Brexit campaign) as a sans serif, Century Schoolbook (MAGA typeface) as a serif and Greta Grotesk (created to simulate Greta Thunberg’s calligraphy on her strike posters) as a display font. My goal was to understand what happens when we take these typefaces out of the context that made them famous. Do they still get the same recognition?

Additionally, I asked people to interact with the program without giving them a context. These are some of the results
